Brand mentions AI search is the most useful — and most misquoted — finding in SEO this year: being mentioned beats being linked to. Ahrefs’ research across tens of thousands of brands and hundreds of millions of AI prompts found that brand mentions track AI visibility far more closely than backlink counts do. The headline has already been flattened into “links are dead” by people selling mention services. That is not what the data says. This article explains what Ahrefs actually found, which mention types matter most, and what a sensible link building programme does differently because of it.
The first caveat belongs up front, because it governs everything that follows: these are correlations, not causation. Ahrefs says so itself. A brand that is mentioned often is usually also a brand that is linked often, searched often, and already famous — and any of those could be driving the AI visibility. What the data can tell us is where AI visibility tends to show up, and where it does not. That is still extremely useful, as long as nobody turns it into a promise.

What the 75,000-Brand Study Found
Ahrefs’ earlier study compared brand factors against visibility in Google’s AI Overviews across 75,000 brands. Branded web mentions had the strongest correlation, at 0.664. Branded anchors came next at 0.527, then branded search volume at 0.392, referring domains at 0.295, and backlink count last at 0.218. Brands in the top quarter for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview mentions; the next quarter down averaged 14; about a quarter of the brands in the starting set had none at all.
Read that carefully. Backlinks still correlated positively — 0.218 is not zero — but they were roughly a third as closely associated with AI Overview visibility as mentions were. And the gap between the top quarter and the next quarter for mentions is enormous: 169 versus 14. AI visibility is concentrated, and mentions are where that concentration shows up first. A brand with almost no web mentions is, in this data, almost invisible to AI answers regardless of its link count.
Which Mention Types Matter Most: The 260-Million-Prompt Study
Ahrefs followed up by zeroing in on mention types, comparing seven of them against AI visibility across 260 million non-branded prompts and 10,000 US brands, covering ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews. The ranking, on the Spearman scale where 1 would mean the two measures rank brands in exactly the same order:
- Reddit mentions (in ranking threads): 0.75 — the strongest single tracker. Reddit is also the second most-cited source across the three AI surfaces, behind only Wikipedia.
- Domain mentions and webpage mentions: 0.70 each — ordinary web pages mentioning the brand, including blogs and niche sites, track AI visibility nearly as strongly as Reddit.
- Press coverage: 0.67 — notably, press does not beat general webpage mentions. A mention on a small, relevant blog is, in this data, at least as associated with AI visibility as a press hit.
- Other types (including TikTok videos and other social formats): 0.59–0.75 range overall — every type studied correlated strongly, which is itself a finding: there is no mention channel that does not matter.
Two patterns inside the study deserve more attention than the headline ranking. First, diminishing returns: a brand with ten times more webpage mentions typically earned only about 3.7 times more AI mentions. Going from near-zero to a real mention footprint matters far more than going from large to enormous. Second, the platform split: the mention relationship is strongest on AI Overviews and weakest on ChatGPT, where only about 2.2 times more AI mentions followed a tenfold mention increase, against 3.5 times on AI Overviews. And a warning from Ahrefs’ publisher research: citations are volatile — in a four-week daily tracking sample, only about a quarter of the pages ChatGPT cited for a prompt were cited again the next day. Mentions are the steadier asset; individual citations come and go.
What Brand Mentions AI Search Means for Link Building
It does not mean links are dead. Backlinks remain a confirmed ranking signal for traditional search, and they correlated positively with AI visibility too. Any provider telling you to abandon links for mentions is selling you the new thing by burying the old one. Our link building for 2027 framework keeps both: links and mentions earned from the same placements.
It does mean unlinked mentions are undervalued. A mention without a link already contributes to the strongest correlate in the data. Converting it to a linked mention — our unlinked brand mentions guide explains how — adds the traditional link signal on top of an asset that was already working. That is the highest-return outreach in this data: the editorial decision is already made, and the conversion cost is one email.
It means guest contributions do double duty. An expert guest post on a relevant site earns a link and a mention in the same placement — the brand name appears in the byline, the bio, and the article text. That is why guest contributions survive every keep/bury list: they are the one tactic that reliably produces both assets at once. See our complete guide to guest posting.
It means small, relevant mentions count. The press-coverage finding is the most democratising result in the study: a brand does not need national press to build AI visibility. Mentions on relevant niche blogs — exactly the placements a guest posting programme produces — track AI visibility at 0.70, ahead of press at 0.67. For agencies, that reframes the pitch: niche relevance is not a compromise for clients who cannot afford big PR; in this data, it is the main event.

A Practical Mention-Building Routine
- Baseline your mentions. Before buying anything, record where the brand is already mentioned — linked and unlinked — and how often AI answers name it for its core buying prompts. Without a baseline, every later claim is guesswork.
- Convert the unlinked first. Find unlinked mentions, prioritise the highest-traffic and most relevant pages, and ask for the link with a short, specific email. This is the cheapest visibility gain available.
- Earn new mentions through contributions. Guest posts, expert commentary and original data earn mentions on sites that would never link to a sales page. Aim for relevance over reach: a mention on the right niche site beats a mention on an irrelevant big one.
- Do not ignore community mentions. Reddit’s 0.75 is real, but it is also the easiest number to misuse. Genuine, helpful participation earns mentions; spammy self-promotion gets removed and damages the brand. Treat community presence as a long-term reputation asset, not a link source.
- Measure mentions and citations separately. Track brand mentions in AI answers (the steadier asset) and citations to your pages (the volatile one) as two different numbers, and report them that way to clients. Conflating them is how a one-day citation swing becomes a false crisis — the same reporting discipline our poisoned SERPs guide recommends for rank trackers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do brand mentions replace backlinks?
No. Mentions track AI visibility more closely in Ahrefs’ data, but backlinks still correlate positively and remain central to traditional rankings. The sensible programme earns both, ideally from the same placements.
Is the Ahrefs data proof that mentions cause AI visibility?
No. It is correlation across large samples, and Ahrefs is explicit about that. Famous brands get mentioned more and cited more for many overlapping reasons. The data guides where to invest effort; it does not guarantee an outcome for any single brand.
Should we chase Reddit mentions specifically?
Only through genuine participation. Reddit’s 0.75 correlation reflects real community discussion, and Reddit is also the second most-cited source in AI answers — but manufactured Reddit promotion is removed, and its citation share has fallen sharply (from about 1 in 5 ChatGPT answers in March 2026 to about 1 in 43 by late September, per Ahrefs’ fan-out study). Earn community mentions; do not buy them.
How long before mentions move AI visibility?
There is no honest fixed timeline — AI answers refresh constantly and individual citations change day to day. What the diminishing-returns finding suggests is that the first real mention footprint matters most, so brands starting near zero should see the clearest relative movement, over weeks rather than days, as new mentions are indexed and absorbed.
VonixCo’s guest posting and mention-conversion work is built for exactly this shift: placements that earn the link and the mention together, on relevant sites with real audiences. See our pricing guide or reach us at vonixco.com or on WhatsApp at +92 340 0096621.
